Je suis fatigué
An exhibition by Colin Schälli
Between 2019 and 2020, the artist lived for seven months without a permanent home. Driven by a desire to escape – from expectations, routines, and solid ground – he began a search for freedom, detachment, and adventure. Paris was only one of several stations during this period.
The experience of homelessness became a turning point, marked by exhaustion and inner disorientation. After his return, Schälli began to draw – as a means of processing and as a step toward regaining psychological stability. The drawings did not arise from observation but from memory and reconstruction.
Five years later, the artist returned to those places to document them photographically. The photographs themselves carry no artistic claim as a medium; the actual artistic act lies in the conscious revisiting and re-encountering of these spaces.
The exhibition presents found objects from that time: the original sanatorium costume, individually found keys, a taken stamp, as well as clothes and a sleeping bag from the Red Cross. Together they form a quiet reflection on exhaustion, dignity, and the fragile relationship between place, memory, and identity.
A visual journey through the streets, corners, and thresholds of Paris — the places that witnessed a period of homelessness, uncertainty, and quiet survival.
